Famous First Downs
Currently my Minimal Travel Table Top Game Collection contains these six card games + dice. Here are simplified rules for Famous First Downs.
Cards & Tokens
For this game, you need:
- A friend or a foe to play with.
- 13 cards (6 red offense cards, 6 blue defense cards and 1 game field card.
- Dice to keep track of momentum and yards gained.
- One token to mark downs.
Setup
- Choose starting player by tossing a die and selecting odds/evens. Starting player starts in offense.
- Give 6 defense cards to one player, 6 offense cards to another and put the field card in the middle.
- Place a token in the 1st down circle
- Place dice worth of 10 points into the Yards to First Down section.
- Place dice worth of 40 points in front of defensive player.
- Play for 3 scoring drives each.
- Place dice worth of 10 points to momentum pool.
Goal of the game
- As in real American football, the goal is to score more points than your opponent.
- Each turn, offense has 4 tries to advance 10 yards.
- If they do, they gain new 4 tries (aka. downs)
- If they reach 50 yards, they score.
Gameplay
- Each turn, the offensive player chooses one card as their card and places it face-up in the table.
- Then defense chooses their response and places it face down matching the offense card.
- Then offense chooses one of the 9 plays (left, middle, right & run, short pass, long pass). After this, defense reveals their card and play is resolved.
- A shield icon means block. No yards for offense, move marker to next down.
- Otherwise, add up defensive minus and offensive plus and reduce the dice in the field accordingly. If there's more yards to claim than there are on the card, claim extra yards from defense's dice.
- If dice on the card run out, fill it with new 10 yards and move the tracker back to 1st down.
- If defensive player runs out of dice, offense gains 7 poinst for a touchdown.
- Another way to score is kicking a field goal. If offense is in their 4th down and within 20 yards, it's automatic 3 points. For every 10 yards beyond that rounded up, roll a die. If any of the dice are odds, attempt fails.
- If a run ends in a failed play on 4th down, swap roles in offense/defense and continue playing without moving dice. If run ends in a touchdown or field goal, all yard dice are moved to new defense.
Momentum
- One way to affect the game is through momentum.
- Defense gains momentum (marked with points in dice) whenever they block.
- Offense gains momentum everytime they reach 1st down if they didn't use any momentum to reach it.
- Momentum doesn't get reset.
- Momentum is spent after a play to change the outcome. If both players spend momentum, more expensive spend wins.
- For failed field goals, a single point of momentum buys one head.
- Offense can also spend 2 momentum to gain extra 5 yards on a successful play if their play is marked with yellow arrow.
- Offense can also spend 3 momentum to replay a down.
- Defense can spend momentum on blocked plays. For 3 momentum, they sack the QB and offense has to give back 5 yards to the middle.
- Defense can also force a replay of a down for 4 momentum.
- Defense can spend 7 momentum for a fumble/interception. This ends the offensive drive immediately and they become offense similar to a failed 4th down.
- If there's no more momentum from the original pool of 10, gaining momentum is substracted from the momentum of the opponent.
Scoring
- After both players have been on offense 3 times, winner is the player with most points.
